ABUKAI pricing has four tiers. Free covers 1 user and 12 expense reports a year. Individual is US$99 a year for 1 user with unlimited reports. Standard Corporate is US$99 per user per year plus a $49 one time setup fee, for teams of 1 to 50. Custom Corporate is quoted for 5 or more users and adds approval flows and credit card reconciliation.

Those figures come from the plans and pricing table on ABUKAI's own sign up page. Below is what each plan actually includes, what a team of 5, 10, 20 or 50 people pays in the first and second year, and where a page priced tool is the cheaper way to get the same receipts into your books.

ABUKAI plans and prices

ABUKAI, Inc. is a San Francisco company that sells ABUKAI Expenses, a phone app that turns receipt photos into finished expense reports. All four plans are billed per year, not per month.

The Free plan has a counting rule worth knowing before you rely on it. ABUKAI states that on free accounts a submission with 11 to 20 receipts counts as two reports, and one with 21 to 30 receipts counts as three. Twelve reports a year can run out by spring for anyone who batches receipts.

What each ABUKAI plan includes

The feature rows on the pricing table split cleanly between the single user plans and the corporate ones.

Two things stand out. Email submission is a corporate feature, so an individual subscriber has to use the app or the web portal. And approval flows are not part of Standard Corporate at all. If your company needs a manager to sign off before a report is paid, you are on a Custom Corporate quote, not the $99 seat.

The credit card reconciliation option sits on Custom Corporate only. Teams that just need card and bank activity matched to the books, without buying a full expense platform for it, can run that step in dedicated bank reconciliation software and keep receipt capture separate.

What ABUKAI costs for a team

Standard Corporate is the plan most small businesses land on. The setup fee is charged once, so the first year costs $49 more than every year after. This is our arithmetic from the published rates.

UsersABUKAI first yearABUKAI each year afterReceiptOCR Plus, yearly
3$346$297$888
5$544$495$888
10$1,039$990$888
20$2,029$1,980$888
50$4,999$4,950$888

At eight people or fewer, ABUKAI is the cheaper of the two, and it gives every employee a phone app that produces a finished expense report. That is a real advantage and we would not argue anyone out of it at that size. From nine people up the per seat charge overtakes our Plus plan, which is $888 a year for a shared workspace with no seat charge and 10,000 pages a month. At 20 users the difference is more than $1,100 a year, and at 50 it is over $4,000.

Where per user pricing stops making sense

A seat fee assumes everyone submits roughly the same amount. Real teams rarely do. A typical service business has two or three heavy travelers and a long tail of technicians, drivers or office staff who submit a few fuel or supply receipts a month. On ABUKAI each of them costs $99 a year whether they file one receipt or three hundred.

Page based pricing flips that. You pay for the documents that get read, and the occasional submitter costs almost nothing. That is the reason we built the receipt collection app workflow around a shared workspace: invite everyone who spends company money, let them upload phone photos or PDFs from any browser, and export one spreadsheet or QuickBooks file for the period.

ABUKAI against ReceiptOCR, honestly

These tools overlap on one step, reading receipts, and differ on almost everything around it.

If you are one person filing your own travel reports, ABUKAI Individual at $99 a year is a sensible buy. If you are a bookkeeper or a finance lead who needs receipts and supplier invoices from many people turned into accurate rows, the per seat model gets expensive fast and the expense report format is not what you need. Our expense report software page covers the reporting side, and receipt scanner for employees explains how to keep team submissions inside the IRS accountable plan window.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Count the people who spend company money. Not just the travelers. Every card holder and everyone who buys supplies out of pocket.
  2. Count the receipts and invoices a month. Pull three months of card and bank activity and count the transactions that need a document behind them.
  3. Decide whether you need approvals. If yes, price Custom Corporate or a full expense platform such as those on our Expensify pricing breakdown. If no, a page priced tool is enough.
  4. Multiply. Users times $99 plus $49 for ABUKAI, against $888 a year for our Plus plan. At eight people or fewer ABUKAI wins on price. From nine up, the page plan does.

If you are still shortlisting small receipt apps, the same breakdown exists for Foreceipt pricing, which charges $72 a year for each member past two.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ABUKAI cost?

ABUKAI Individual costs US$99 a year for one user with unlimited expense reports. Standard Corporate costs US$99 per user per year plus a one time $49 setup fee for teams of 1 to 50 users. Custom Corporate, for 5 or more users with approval flows or card reconciliation, is quoted individually. A Free plan covers 12 reports a year.

Is ABUKAI free?

There is a Free plan for one user with occasional expenses, limited to 12 expense reports a year. Larger submissions count as more than one report: 11 to 20 receipts count as two and 21 to 30 count as three. Unlimited reports start with the Individual plan at US$99 a year.

Does ABUKAI integrate with QuickBooks?

Yes. Every plan, including Free, lists QBO and IIF report formats and upload to QuickBooks Online, along with Dropbox, ExpensAble and Xero Expense Claims. Uploads to Exact, FreshBooks, Intacct, Sage One and Xero Invoices are listed only on the corporate plans.

Does ABUKAI charge per user?

Yes. Standard Corporate is US$99 per user per year, so ten people cost $990 a year plus the $49 setup fee in the first year. Seats are transferable on the corporate plans, which helps when staff change, but every active person still needs a seat.

What is a cheaper alternative to ABUKAI for teams?

For teams of nine or more people that need receipts turned into data rather than individual expense reports, a page priced tool costs less. ReceiptOCR Plus is $888 a year with a shared workspace, no seat charge and 10,000 pages a month, exporting Excel, CSV and QuickBooks files.
