Smart Receipts pricing has three tiers. Free is mobile only with manual entry. Pro is $99.99 a year ($8.33 a month) or $12.99 month to month and adds AI receipt recognition, email forwarding, cloud backup and PDF, CSV and ZIP exports. Max is $139 a year ($11.58 a month) or $17.99 monthly and adds US and Canadian bank connections plus bank statement imports.

Those prices come from the Smart Receipts pricing section and its own FAQ, which also notes that web prices are the best value and in app purchase prices may differ. Below is what each plan actually unlocks, what a year really costs on each billing option, and where a per page extraction tool is the cheaper or better buy for a business with more than a shoebox of receipts.

How much does Smart Receipts cost?

For most buyers the real choice is Pro or Max, because the Free plan does not read receipts for you. It is a manual entry app with basic reports, which is fine for a handful of receipts and slow for anything more.

PlanYearly billingMonthly billing12 months on monthlyWhere it runsWhat it adds
Free$0$0$0iOS and Android onlyManual receipt entry, basic expense reports, no ads
Pro$99.99 ($8.33 a month)$12.99$155.88Mobile and webAI receipt recognition, email forwarding, cloud backup, spending insights, PDF, CSV and ZIP exports
Max$139 ($11.58 a month)$17.99$215.88Mobile and webEverything in Pro plus bank connections (US and Canada) and bank statement and CSV imports

The yearly toggle is labeled as a 36 percent saving. Our arithmetic agrees: paying Pro monthly for a full year costs $55.89 more than paying yearly, and Max costs $76.88 more. If you already know you will use it all year, yearly billing is the obvious call.

Is Smart Receipts free?

Yes, in the narrow sense. The Free plan has no recurring charge and covers manual entry and basic expense reports on iPhone and Android. It does not include AI receipt recognition, cloud backup, web access or CSV export. Those start at Pro, so anyone who wants the app to read receipts is really buying Pro.

Older third party write ups describe buying small packs of receipt scans for a dollar or so. That scan pack model does not appear on the current Smart Receipts pricing section, so budget from the vendor page, not from a blog post that may be several app versions old.

Smart Receipts Pro vs Max, which plan do you need?

Pick Pro if your receipts are the source of truth. Pick Max if you want card and bank transactions to flow in so you can match receipts against them. That single feature is the whole $39 a year difference on yearly billing.

FeatureFreeProMax

Email forwarding of receiptsNoYesYes
Web accessNoYesYes
Cloud backup across devicesNoYesYes

The recognition itself is the same on both paid plans. Smart Receipts says it reads the merchant, date, total and tax from a paper or digital receipt. Line items are not listed as a recognized field, and the pricing section does not list an accounting integration such as QuickBooks or Xero. Reports leave the app as PDF or CSV files for reimbursement, bookkeeping and tax filing.

Who Smart Receipts is priced for

The product is built around one person or a small crew snapping receipts on the go and producing an expense report. Its own site names freelancers, field and trades teams, nonprofits with staff spending in other currencies, and small business owners collecting everyone's expenses at month end. For those buyers, $99.99 a year is cheap for what it saves in evenings spent on reimbursement paperwork.

It is a weaker fit in three situations, and they are the ones where people start looking at other tools.

  • You already have the receipts as files. A folder of 600 scanned receipts from last year, or a monthly zip of supplier PDFs from a client, is a batch job. A phone first app can import them, but the value of a camera workflow is gone.
  • You need every field and line item as data. Merchant, date, total and tax is enough for an expense report. It is not enough for job costing, sales tax review, or checking supplier invoices line by line.
  • You book into QuickBooks. With no listed accounting integration, the path is a CSV export and a manual import, every month.

Smart Receipts cost per receipt

Because Smart Receipts charges a flat subscription with no receipt cap on its pricing section, the cost per receipt falls quickly with volume. The figures below are our arithmetic from the published prices, with yearly billing divided into months.

PlanMonthly equivalentAt 25 receiptsAt 100 receiptsAt 500 receipts
Smart Receipts Pro, yearly$8.33$0.33$0.083$0.017
Smart Receipts Max, yearly$11.58$0.46$0.116$0.023
ReceiptOCR Starter, yearly$24$0.96$0.24$0.048
ReceiptOCR Starter, monthly$49$1.96$0.49$0.098

On price per receipt, Smart Receipts wins at every volume in that table, and we would not pretend otherwise. If an expense report is the finished product, it is the better buy. Our Starter plan is priced for a different output: 2,500 pages a month on the faster model, each one turned into columns for merchant, date, subtotal, tax, tip, total and line items, and exported to Excel, CSV or a QuickBooks file in one batch of up to 50 files.

When a per page extraction tool is the better buy

The honest dividing line is the job, not the price. A receipt app captures and reports. An extraction tool turns documents into rows you can sort, pivot and import.

Supplier invoices with line items for job costingReceiptOCRLine item extraction from multi page invoices
Books kept in QuickBooksReceiptOCRQBO export on every paid plan instead of a CSV rebuild

If you are in the second half of that table, upload a few of your real receipts to the tool at the top of this page and check the columns you get back. For a whole backlog, the bulk receipt scanner takes up to 50 files per upload and returns one spreadsheet, and the receipt data extraction page lists every field we read. Teams booking straight into the ledger can use the QuickBooks receipt scanner route instead of rebuilding CSV imports each month.

Bookkeepers who hand the month's spending to a client or a board as a presentation rather than a spreadsheet can turn the report into a slide deck without redrawing the charts by hand.

How Smart Receipts compares with other receipt apps on price

Smart Receipts sits in the low cost band of paid receipt apps. The other two we have priced in the same way both use caps or member charges where Smart Receipts uses a flat subscription.

AppEntry paid plan, yearlyMain limit
Smart Receipts Pro$99.99 a yearNo receipt cap listed; no accounting integration listed
Foreceipt Individual$60 a year200 receipts a month, 2 members, QuickBooks only on Business
WellyBox Basic$228 a year50 documents a month, yearly only

The full rate cards, member fees and cost per receipt tables are on our Foreceipt pricing and WellyBox pricing pages. If your receipts come from travel rather than the office, travel expense management software covers the reimbursement side in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Smart Receipts Pro?

Smart Receipts Pro costs $99.99 a year, which works out to $8.33 a month, or $12.99 if you pay month to month. It adds AI receipt recognition, email forwarding, cloud backup, web access and PDF, CSV and ZIP exports to the Free plan. Web prices are listed as the best value.

What does Smart Receipts Max add?

Max adds automatic bank connections for US and Canadian banks and imports of bank statements and CSV files, on top of everything in Pro. It costs $139 a year ($11.58 a month) or $17.99 monthly, so the bank feed is worth $39 a year on yearly billing.

Does Smart Receipts work with QuickBooks?

The Smart Receipts pricing section and FAQ do not list a QuickBooks or Xero integration. Reports export as PDF or CSV files, so getting receipts into QuickBooks means importing a CSV. A tool with a direct QBO export skips that step.

Can Smart Receipts scan old paper receipts?

Yes. Its FAQ says you can scan old paper receipts at any time and import a CSV or bank statement to bring in past expenses. For a large backlog that is already scanned into PDFs, a batch extraction tool that returns one spreadsheet is usually faster than working through a phone app.

Is Smart Receipts worth paying for?

For a freelancer or small crew who needs expense reports and loses receipts, yes: $99.99 a year is low for the time it saves. It is less suited to bookkeepers who need line items, multi page supplier invoices or QuickBooks ready files from large batches.
